Business: Casella – Family Brands

Name: Michael Miller

Occupation: Automation Technician

What do you do each day?

I started an electrical apprenticeship in 2012, gained my electrical license in 2016 and promoted to automation technician in 2018.

What do you do each day?

My current day to day activities include;

  • Designing new control systems.
  • Troubleshooting and improving existing control systems.
  • Programming machinery either from new, to add features or to fix existing issues.
  • Training electrical apprentices on all aspects of automation.

What do you like most about your job?

Seeing a large project from start to finish. Working with the Mechanical Engineers to design a system, selecting the appropriate instrumentation, working with the electrical team to install the system, programming the PLC and SCADA systems from scratch and then finally seeing the system run is an incredibly rewarding experience.

What did you do to qualify?

I finished year 12 in 2010 and obtained my Higher School Certificate, after this I worked in an industrial setting (packaging line) for 12 months before applying for my apprenticeship. Previous to this I had a strong interest in electronics and computers. I believe both of these points helped me get my apprenticeship and then move through into my current position.

What’s next in your career?

I am currently in my 3rd year of an Engineering Degree (Associates Degree of Automation, Control and Instrumentation). Once that has been completed, I hope to start a series of shorter courses to expand my abilities even further.
